Global Switch is a top-tier data centre service provider offering hosting services to all manner of clients within the ISP, banking and financial services industries.
Global Switch data centres are specifically designed to house and protect mission-critical IT equipment with access to multiple carriers and service providers, 24x7 security, diverse power supplies, environmental control and offer large scalability to their clients.
Global Switch, Singapore are located in Paya Lebar, which is one of the deemed technology areas close to Changi International Airport.
The Challenge
The data centre facility consists of approximately 22,000 sqm gross floor space on seven levels. The main plant and equipment are located in the basement, roof, on all floors and are also external to the building envelope.
As this was a retrofit of an existing facility, Global Switch engaged a full design and consultancy team to help deliver fully fitted-out spaces to different clients whilst upgrading the facility to provide high capacity and resilience to the
main mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
Capital investment programmes were formulated for each stage of the upgrade and for client fit out of spaces. The baseline budgets were established for Global Switch approval prior to contractor engagement. Tight design and delivery schedules were raised against client appointments for master programming and construction implementation.
The Solution
PTS Singapore was appointed as the lead project management organisation to control the overall delivery of the client suites and also for system upgrades to the site. In this regard, PTS Singapore formulated master schedules, risk assessment, issue logs, progress control and reporting, cost estimate reviews and cost control functions.
Project managers were appointed to control the different suites that were being fitted out simultaneously, and these were site-based for the duration of the contract period.
Vendors with longer lead times were also controlled by the PTS project management team. PTS consulting was able to assist by assigning and then overseeing specific contracts to the general contractor.
Reporting directly to the managing director of Singapore, briefings and schedules were discussed and costs and budget forecasts were reviewed on a weekly basis.
The Benefits
Having previously supported Global Switch, PTS Singapore was able to provide a broad depth of experience and resource to the multiple projects and programmes undertaken surrounding the data centre upgrade.
PTS utilised its expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering and IT to improve the data centre environment and fulfil the business requirements of Global Switch and its client base.
